Renault Captur with Stillavine. Test drive: The controversial Renault Kaptur

Renault is a confident leader in the SUV segment in the Customs Union market. Even if it only had the Duster left, it would single-handedly take the French manufacturer to the top of the class. But along with a pleasant price and “masculine” character, this crossover has one important drawback - it is too brutal in appearance. It's hard to imagine a stylish guy or girl driving a Duster. If you are not yet thinking about grandchildren and you are not particularly concerned about raising the retirement age, but at the same time you would like to have a budget crossover, this article is for you. Onliner.by tested the long-awaited new product in the class of inexpensive SUVs - Renault Kaptur. Go!

The Russians started thinking about developing “their own” Captur back in 2012, when it became known that the Captur (through “C”) based on the Clio was about to appear in Europe. But Renault Russia didn’t want to simply localize the Euro-Captur. And such a car would not work for us. Small, with an expensive platform and turbo engines. Do we need it? And while Belarusians were crowding in line for the Duster, work was in full swing within the walls of the Russian Renault office on a stylish youth crossover that virtually any working person aged “about 30” could afford. What did the Russians do? They took the cool styling of the Captur and the proven, reliable Duster platform. The result is Kaptur. Beautiful and practical. But is everything so sweet? Now we'll find out!

In the airport parking lot in Sochi, a couple of “Captures” in maximum performance were waiting for us. Externally, the model is very similar to its European “brother”. But in reality our Kaptur is larger. It is even slightly longer than the Duster. The Russian SUV shares common headlights and doors with the EU model. And engineers doubt the interchangeability of elements - Kaptur is still closer to Duster. The European car is built on the Clio platform. Ours is on a B0 trolley. By the way, the “renoshniki” themselves prefer to call it Global Access, since the chassis has been highly modified.

There are no complaints about the design of the car. The model is bright, expressive and fresh. Along the perimeter of the entire body there are plastic linings that perform not only an aesthetic function. 17-inch wheels are available for the crossover (a first for a model on the B0 platform), so engineers had to modify the suspension to accommodate the new wheels. To attract young buyers, the Russians will offer ample opportunities to customize the car. There are two-tone body paint, branded stickers, and multi-colored wheels. The palette of available shades is wider (and brighter) than that of the Duster.

- The typical Duster buyer is a man. In the literal sense of the word. Hunter, fisherman, head of the family. Such people like the car's angular appearance, which may have turned off many potential buyers who wanted something more refined. The Kaptur crossover was created just for the latter. We think that the new product will be purchased by young people and it will bring us new customers who previously went to competitors,- one of the creators of the model shared his thoughts. Optimism for Renault employees was added by the departure of Nissan Juke from the Russian market. Chevrolet Trax and Opel Mokka cars left the region a long time ago. It turns out that Kaptur has no serious competitors left. And there are still plenty of people willing to buy an inexpensive B-SUV.

Kaptur doors have a double seal around the entire perimeter and a triple seal at the bottom. Dust will not reach your trousers!

In the cabin, everything is also similar to the Euro model. But if you look closely, you will notice a “Logan” multimedia system with inconvenient volume keys. It works quickly, the menu is intuitive, but you can’t see the picture in the sun. The steering wheel is like that of a Clio and, unlike the Captur, does not have plastic lining (they say it rubs your hand!). The steering wheel is adjustable only in angle, but there were no problems with adjusting the driver's seat. The chair is equipped with a “lift” and there is a wide range of backrest adjustments. The seat heating button is at the bottom. You'll have to get used to it. But there is a folding armrest.

A very strange place for a cup holder. Personally, I would always have my cell phone here. You can also place coffee on the rear central tunnel (but it is intended for second-row passengers)

Plastic is everywhere - cheap both in appearance and in feel. The budget is evident everywhere, but the situation is partly saved by the glossy trim on the center console and the interesting dashboard. The latter is similar to that of the European crossover, but has a number of differences. The speedometer is located in the center, at the edges there is a tachometer and a fuel level sensor (tank - 50 liters). The seats are new with more developed lateral support. More convenient than Duster. There are several finishes available, including leather-like and a 2-tone option (with orange accents). Above the center console there is an additional glove compartment. Between the gear lever and the handbrake there are keys for cruise control and ECO mode (changes the gas pedal setting).

If the front still somehow “smells” of a youth car, then the rear is melancholy. There is not much space, there is no armrest. The only entertainment is a separate lamp (like the Duster). The 387-liter trunk has an optimal cubic shape. By folding the rear sofa, the volume can be increased to 1200 liters. The test machines had an optional organizer partition. I want the same one for myself!

We were offered two petrol options for testing - a 1.6-liter manual (114 hp) and a 2-liter with a 4-automatic transmission (143 hp). Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, respectively. There will also be a 2-liter version with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.6 with a CVT (will appear in September). There are no plans for diesel Capturs. I take the key card for the 2-liter version and go load my things into the trunk!

Push-button engine start is already standard on the car. Not bad! Moreover, the key card does not have to be inserted into the hole on the center console - it can be kept in your pocket. It is curious that with such a relatively expensive “feature”, light bulbs in the sun visors for the crossover are not available even for an extra charge, and the hood does not have a gas stop (like the Logan).

Renault has not yet announced official figures for acceleration dynamics. Most likely, for the 2-liter modification we are talking about 11 seconds. The car definitely lacks traction. To be honest, it doesn’t work at all! You press the pedal to the floor, the gearbox drops a couple of steps, and the engine just roars. When driving uphill, it is better to activate manual mode and decide for yourself when to engage a particular gear. Complete with such a striking appearance, you instinctively expect thoroughbred behavior on the road and good acceleration. But in practice - the same Duster. Although the Kaptur is more “passenger-like” in handling. It is noticeable that the springs are stiffer here. And even though the suspension is not as “armor-piercing” off-road as that of a co-platform vehicle, body roll and steering response are more reminiscent of a C-class hatchback.

The car feels great at speeds over 100 km/h. Changing lanes in such modes does not require the driver to frantically adjust the trajectory, and body sway is no more than that of competitors. The noise insulation is better than that of the Duster, and, they say, no worse than that of the Euro-Capture (I haven’t driven it - I don’t know). So the only thing really missing here is the speakers. If I didn’t know that there was a 2-liter engine under the hood, I would be sure that I was driving the 1.6-liter version. Perhaps it’s the gearbox, which, with many modifications, has been around for more than 10 years, moving from model to model. It would be interesting to drive a Kaptur 2.0 with a 6-speed manual.

In this article we will talk about a test drive of the Renault Captur - a crossover for Russian highways and difficult off-road conditions. And although there are prerequisites for positioning it as a copy of the Renault Duster for the Russian Federation, the new model has nevertheless stepped forward and impressed with its bold and reliable functionality.

Many magazines, Internet resources, branded car dealerships began to order test drives, Renault Captur decided to brightly present it to the Russian consumer, and it was a success. You will learn about the results of the tests carried out from this article. Interest in Renault Kaptur has not waned since March 2016, when the official presentation of the model took place. And although the European version of Captur differs in design and “filling” from the Captur imported to Russia, the latter is still capable of surprising with quality, low noise and comfort.

Renault Captur off-road

Renault Captur was test driven several times at the Dmitrovsky training ground to evaluate the functionality of the car, its off-road maneuverability, and ability to handle steep climbs and difficult trajectories. The Renault Captur had to pass a difficult test; it seemed that the car was already working at the limit of its capabilities when it moved along a training ground simulating difficult off-road conditions with potholes and clayey ruts filled with water. Sharp braking at high speeds placed aggressive stress on the tires.

The tested vehicles found themselves in force majeure situations, and the pilots had to use extraordinary thinking and rely on the technical power of the vehicle. Typically, the Renault Kaptur test was carried out in a familiar scenario, using a complex test scheme, because the Renault Kaptur is considered a powerful middle-class crossover, since its functionality is based on a reliable and high-quality technical base, namely:

Target audience Renault Captur

European developers are positioning the model as a modern, maneuverable crossover that can appeal to young people. The Renault Kaptur feels good off-road, so it is suitable for active young people under 35 years of age who are able to spend their free time brightly, go fishing, and go on multi-day hikes. All the necessary equipment and gear will fit in the spacious trunk, designed for 387 liters. And the simply “unbreakable” suspension will cover hundreds of kilometers off-road, giving the car owner unforgettable encounters with pristine nature.

Thus, no matter what the Renault Captur test is, local or large-scale, the car still passes all tests with dignity, demonstrating its inherent functionality. Renault Kaptur is a “European” that feels confident on the roads of Russia.

Dimensions of Renault Captur

Dust rises above the rocky dirt road - hot Sochi guys (there are no others here) drive tourists through the mountains in open UAZs. And now they are breathing down my back. “Let them through!” - a colleague sitting on the right tells me. I would love to, but the road is a bit narrow. Or maybe just go at their pace? Of course, we don’t have a frame jeep, but it also allows...

Marketers from Renault are also dashing guys. I think if they succeed, their idea will be taught in marketing courses. Agree, it’s brave to make two crossovers: first the Captur, and then... the Kaptur. They are, of course, not pioneers - remember the Brazilian Volkswagen Gol? The difference is that Kaptur is intended to be a global project.

At the same time, put Captur and Kaptur next to each other - and the game “Find the Ten Differences” will become truly exciting. They look almost the same, but inside they seem like twin brothers. However, it won’t be possible to put them side by side - Captur will not be sold in Russia. There will be a marketer standing nearby who will exclaim: “This is a completely different car!” And he will be right.

Created on the basis of the Renault Clio, the Captur was recognized as too “European” for Russia - only front-wheel drive, short-travel suspensions, consider it a car's ground clearance. Plus turbo engines that people don’t like. And it was decided to make our own crossover - taking the European appearance (he’s a good-looking guy, you must admit!) and combining it with the right filling. Fortunately, Renault has long had its own plant in Russia and its own bestseller among crossovers - Duster.

Here the marketer will exclaim again: “This is a completely different car!” And he will be right again. Partly.

The Kaptur is built on the same Global Access platform as the Duster. They seriously worked on it, but all the changes are evolutionary. New suspension arms and a reinforced subframe were designed to accommodate 17-inch wheels (a first for the Global Access platform). The springs, shock absorbers and steering were retuned. They even changed the power structure of the body, which became stiffer. And the noticeable difference is the doors covering the thresholds. Here the driver's trousers have a chance to stay clean. As a result, the Russian Captur turned out to be wider, longer and more spacious than the European Captur. And its ground clearance is the envy of other “crossovers” - 205-210 mm. Plus metal protection for the engine and fuel lines.

All this, however, is slightly dissonant with the epithet “urban crossover” that the creators give to the Kaptur. Although the car drives more solidly on asphalt than the Duster: it is stable in a straight line, rolls less in corners, and there are fewer shocks and more information on the steering wheel. It could use a bigger engine... The two-liter, 143-horsepower naturally aspirated engine on the all-wheel drive crossover is hampered by an old 4-speed automatic transmission. So much so that the front-wheel drive Kaptur with a 1.6 engine and manual transmission is perceived as more alive! However, Renault is making its main bet on the Kaptur 1.6 with a CVT - it will appear in the fall.

But 114 hp. by 1300 kg and 12.5 seconds to a hundred - today for a metropolis this is a “subsistence minimum.” Moreover, both engines do not pamper the driver with low-end traction. Off-road, the Kaptur with its excellent geometric cross-country ability, impenetrable suspension and GKN clutch, which cannot be overheated, is in its element. More precisely, in the element of “Duster”.

In general, the Kaptur asks for a sticker “this is what the new Duster could be.” Stylish and with a more comfortable interior. He could have, but he didn't. Why? Because it would inevitably become more expensive. After all, the price for Kaptur easily exceeds a million. With such prices, maintaining the status of “popular favorite” is clearly more difficult. But I want to maintain it, just like leadership in the class. Selling new-Duster and old-Duster at the same time is not an option: competitors have sad experience... -

So, we will master Kaptur.

The one with the letter K.

The successful appearance of Kaptur in light of the rather boring and similar competitors turned out to be a win-win way to attract the attention of the target audience. According to the calculations of the French, those who are younger and behind the times should be the first to fall for the new product. That is, those very active young people who have already acquired not only a longboard and a discount card at , but also their first savings, and possibly a family.

And then there’s this sweetie. It’s like Renault, but not boring and utilitarian, but even fashionable and unusual. Colors for every taste, both body and roof.

From 19 combinations your mouth opens wide and your eyes widen. And we haven’t yet mentioned roof stickers, moldings and stylish wheels with inserts. Everything is the same as for owners of a Citroen DS or Mini. At the same time, the price tag does not bite.

If games with roofs and flowers are not enough, you can add even more individuality to your car with the help of graphic stickers on the roof and hood, as well as side moldings, trims on the radiator grille and the tailgate. Only the complete set will not be cheap - 29,990 rubles. Full squeak - 17-inch alloy wheels in orange, cost 10,990 rubles.

Renault

But if you initially trust too much to the pretty wrapper, meeting reality can, if not disappoint, definitely upset you. The cabin and getting into it are comparable to returning from heaven to earth. Well, you shouldn’t expect that a budget car will suddenly turn out to be a higher class - these are not the same times now. But the “retailers” do not recommend comparing the model with the Duster (next to which the car looks very aesthetically pleasing). In vain, it would be possible to praise.

Looking for buttons, the hood and getting used to the steering wheel

The first Gazeta.Ru received one of the simplest versions of the budget crossover. 114-horsepower 1.6-liter engine, five-speed manual, front-wheel drive. There are no frills in the cabin, unlike more expensive and more elegant trim levels. A lot of hard plastic, a fabric interior, again a plastic steering wheel upholstery, which you involuntarily wince when holding onto it, and a simple media system with a not very user-friendly interface, well known from the Renault Duster. The only feature that makes life easier is the rear view camera. And also a key card, which is required even in basic configurations. This, by the way, immediately added points to Kaptur.

A black, inconspicuous piece of plastic can be placed in a bag and does not have to be taken out to open the door.

True, keyless entry only works if the car is not locked: it locks itself when the key card is removed from it. If, to calm your soul, you also press the button on the key, you will also have to open it manually. Also, looking out from the balcony, using the key fob you can remotely start the engine and turn on the interior heating.

But if your optimism has returned, then, unfortunately, you have to admit: it will soon begin to evaporate. The steering wheel is not very comfortable - the large plastic steering wheel seems to lose somewhere some of the information received from the car, and behaves rather empty and soulless. I would like to be able to perform maneuvers with its help more accurately. We found the multimedia control keys under the steering wheel a week later. But they didn’t use it - again, it’s not very convenient. Another point that literally immediately caught my eye was the hood, the edge of which is almost impossible to see while in the car. Driving without seeing the nose of the crossover is a dubious pleasure.

You can “cheer up” the interior with the help of the Orange package. For 13,990 rubles. you'll get seats with orange textile inserts, floor mats with a reflective orange outline, and orange trim around the center console. In general, it will be more beautiful, but this decoration, reminiscent of the decoration of the Lada Cross, should feel less expensive

Alina Raspopova/Gazeta.Ru

The desire to stand up and crane my neck far forward before parking or changing lanes while stuck in traffic became a habit after a month of traveling in the Kaptur.

The chairs themselves, by the way, turned out to be comfortable: there are enough customization options. A scattering of useful buttons in the most unexpected places is one of the signature features of the “French” in general. However, Kaptur turned out to be without any special tricks in this regard. The seat heating button was easy to find. True, it only works in “on” and “off” modes - there are no different modes.

The operation of a 114-horsepower 1.6-liter engine paired with a “mechanics”, frankly speaking, does not start. But for a measured ride it is enough. Long gears are a great help in traffic jams. In the city, as well as for driving to the country with civilized roads without the threat of serious washouts, front-wheel drive and high ground clearance are quite sufficient

Kirill Keylin/Renault

At the same time, you can only understand whether the heat is on or not directly by touch: there is also no light indication on the switch.

The cruise control buttons can be found to the right of the driver near the gear lever. In general, it is possible to reach. But pressing them at speed is dangerous. It's easier to give up cruise control than to try to control it while driving. Next to it is the Eco mode button. Information that you are driving in economy mode will be reflected on the instrument panel.

Let's go and take our time

On the road, the Kaptur is leisurely - acceleration to “hundreds” in 12.5 seconds makes itself felt, but no one promised miracles here. The gearbox, even with only five steps, works well. The gears are long and, compared to what the Duster currently offers, are found and shifted more clearly. When going uphill, the car, which is nice, insures the driver and does not roll back.

If you go out on the highway and let the Kaptur rev up, it turns out that at the permitted maximum speeds it behaves quite well.

But you shouldn’t expect agility when maneuvering: the car is not for recklessness, but to simply get to the right place with convenience and at the same time feel like a human being. This is us talking about painful issues. If last year on the road many drivers in passing cars did not consider the Duster to be a car at all and harshly cut off for no reason, then they are now looking at the Kaptur with interest. The neighbor next door looked at the car for a long time in the morning, looking out the windows, and then with a sigh he drove off in a Citroen.

Can you get used to it?

In a month, of course, you get used to the simple Renault Kaptur. You avoid the far left lanes, stop looking for the button to change the next track, buy a smartphone holder to use convenient navigation, and perform maneuvers more carefully, trying not to rub against your neighbor. It is clear that the share of versions with a “handle” is unlikely to become significant in the total sales of the brand. Most likely, those who prefer two pedals will want to have a fancy car. At the same time, I liked the car much more with the CVT X-Tronic variator. But more on that in the next test drive in the new autumn season.

Dynamic, bright, modern, stylish and spectacular - this is how you can describe your feelings by looking at one of the latest developments of the famous French corporation Renault - Kaptur. Especially for the Russian market, a version of the Captur was recently released at the Moscow plant - an analogue of its European “brother”, only adapted for our roads and more affordable. In this regard, the results of testing the first model aroused genuine interest, i.e. the first test drive for Renault Captur, and with it all the identified similarities and differences, advantages and disadvantages of the new crossover.

General overview of the new development

The new product appeared on the Russian market quite recently, in the summer of 2016. Renault Captur is a crossover that successfully combines the qualities of a city car (minivan, hatchback) with an all-terrain vehicle suitable for off-road driving.

Capturs are budget five-seater cars. Externally, the Russian version is very similar to the “European” one, with only a few differences, which is primarily due to the use of different platforms. For the European model, the basis was taken from the Clio platform (compact, with low ground clearance), and for the Russian model, the basis was given by Duster, which led to an increase in dimensions (it is longer, wider, higher - in general, the interior turned out to be more spacious). A review of the internal design reveals virtually no differences; both options are stylish, well-thought-out, and ergonomic.

The “calling card” of the new crossover, as confirmed by reviews, is not only the dynamic and refined design, but also the two-tone paint job. The car stands out from others with a spectacular contrast, in which the body is made in one of the provided colors (orange, green, etc.), and the roof, A-pillars and mirror housings are in opposite colors (the buyer can choose from “Ivory” or "Black Pearl").

What distinguishes Renault Captur from many models presented on the domestic market is its excellent quality characteristics and equipment, which can be seen by anyone who has decided to buy a brand new car and who is simply interested in new products in the automotive world.

Important! The new crossover takes into account and provides all the elements necessary for safe driving (emergency brake booster, stability control system, airbags and much more). The model itself successfully passed a crash test during production - an emergency test confirming the strength and reliability of this car.

Test drive of a crossover and some features of the procedure

The manufacturer has declared quite high capabilities of the new crossover, impeccable technical characteristics and driving data, and a wide range of equipment is available to choose from. To make sure how all the promised qualities correspond to reality, a test drive of the Renault Captur 2016 will help - in other words, the first test drive of a new car in order to evaluate its driving characteristics.

You can count on a test drive for Renault Captur when making a purchase from an official dealer, but often buyers are offered to test the model in limited conditions when it is not possible to fully evaluate the characteristics. In this case, you can go the other way: further analyze the declared characteristics and watch the test drive conducted for the new Renault Captura 2016 on video.

Many potential buyers, when choosing which model to choose, prefer to first watch how an independent test drive of Renault Captur was conducted in Russia on video. Why is this convenient? On the one hand, because it becomes possible to get a real picture without even leaving home, and draw conclusions based on it. On the other hand, you can watch a video test drive of a 2016 Renault Captur with the exact configuration you are interested in, and not the one offered in the cabin with the best “filling”, which will be much more comfortable.

Another point that usually prevents you from fully listening and feeling the car is that when conducting a test drive for a Renault Kaptur, a salon manager will always be present next to the buyer, constantly praising and highlighting the main qualities, which will not allow you to fully concentrate on your own feelings.

On YouTube today you can find and watch various independent videos showing new products in action. Here you can view the test with Stillavin and more. The results of independent testing are offered by Anton Avtoman and many others, so any potential buyer has the opportunity to look at different options and get the most complete information about the car they are interested in. And most importantly: the Internet resource contains videos of the Renault Captur test drive in Russian, which means everything will be very clear to you.

What was noted during testing of the new product?

A long test drive of Renault Captur always begins with an assessment of the external data of the model (they are already described above), as well as detailing the moments convenient for the driver. To these you can add: thresholds hidden by the elongated shape of the door (this will protect against dirt getting on your trousers when landing), a comfortable handle designed for a natural grip. Many will like a fresh solution - equipping models with frameless wipers instead of boring and old frame ones.

The overall impression is positively affected by the thoughtful ergonomics of the interior, as well as its stylish design, which looks more expensive than it actually is. There are different upholstery options for the interior: leather or fabric (fashionable 3D fabric with silver or black inserts), and both options look presentable. The interior space, although it seems small, can comfortably accommodate five people of different heights and builds. The seats in the cabin are equipped with supporting side projections; some models are equipped with armrests for the driver's seat, which significantly increases driving comfort. Renault Captur will be convenient for a car owner of any height; sitting behind the wheel is especially comfortable, since both it and the driver’s seat are height adjustable. Steering wheel angle adjustment is also provided.

Even watching the Renault Captur test drive on video, one cannot help but notice the stylish, impressive and quite ergonomic dashboard. All instruments and buttons are located exactly where it is most convenient for the driver; in the center is a seven-inch screen of the proprietary multimedia system (with good resolution, navigation and many other advantages).

Carefully! On the crossover, the button for the “Cruise Control” option is located near the handbrake (in other models it is located near the steering column).

The trunk also deserves attention. At first glance, it is not very large, with a free volume of 387 liters, but this size can be relatively easily increased to 1200 liters, namely by folding the rear seats. The shelf for small items can be easily dismantled, resulting in a spacious and roomy, almost square hangar for transporting large loads, the geometry of which is not disturbed by the protrusions of the wheel arches.

When conducting a test drive of the Renault Captura, special attention is, of course, paid to its driving qualities and characteristics. If you look at the comparison with Duster, on the platform of which it is developed, then Kaptur is different:

  • softer and quieter ride (most road irregularities are practically not felt);
  • cornering stability;
  • high endurance;
  • minimum shocks on the steering wheel caused by wheel impacts.

Aerodynamic noise is not observed at speeds less than 100 km/h, the rustling of the engine and the rustling of tires are practically inaudible. Testing notes the excellent soundproofing capabilities of the crossover.

The main and advantageous feature of the Renault Captur is that the stylish design goes well with a reliable, powerful suspension (identical to the one installed on the Hyundai Creta). Here, the front axle is equipped with an independent chassis, which is currently the best for this type of vehicle, with MacPherson struts and a lateral stability adjuster. All this allows the crossover to move comfortably on different roads (dirt, asphalt, rough terrain), while ensuring an ideal smooth ride.

A separate question is the choice of motor

When choosing a model and viewing the test results, we should not forget that the new crossover can be equipped with one of two types of gasoline engines (corresponding to Euro-5, the European environmental standard):

  • 1.6 liters;
  • for 2 liters.

The models provide for the use of different types of transmissions. Some cars have a manual transmission, which can be equipped with a five-speed or six-speed gearbox (later, models with a CVT with seven quasi-gears can be produced). More and more car enthusiasts are choosing a four-speed automatic; such models are excellent for off-road driving and are equipped with an additional cooling circuit, thanks to which the gearbox is protected from overheating.

Among the individual advantages is the Eco Mode, which allows you to achieve economical fuel consumption due to the fact that, depending on the speed or driving style, it optimizes its supply.

Renault Captur has just entered the Russian market, and is of high interest to car enthusiasts, especially since it is free from the shortcomings of the Duster, which was marked by an anti-test drive.
