How to change the oil in the Nexia gearbox. Motor oils and everything you need to know about motor oils

The Daewoo Nexia car appeared in the vastness of our country in the second half of the 90s of the 20th century. It immediately gained popularity among Russian car enthusiasts, since it was developed by specialists from the German company Opel on the basis of the Opel Kadett E model, which was extremely popular in the late 80s, specifically for the markets of developing countries.

The distinctive features of this car were its relatively low price, at the level of front-wheel drive models of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, high reliability compared to domestic cars of the same years of production, and low operating costs relative to other foreign cars. However, over time, the Daewoo Nexia began to become obsolete and lose its position in the automobile market of our country to new models of the Volga Automobile Concern, and therefore in 2013 it was replaced by the more modern model Daewoo Gentra.

To extend the life of the Daewoo Nexia without problems, it is important to change consumables and operating fluids on time. Changing the oil in the engine and gearbox (gearbox) is not a complicated procedure and can be done without the help of specialists.

Necessary clarifications

Depending on the country of production, Nexias were equipped with 2 types of gearboxes.

  1. 5-speed manual.
  2. 4-speed automatic.

Sedans produced in the Republic of Uzbekistan were equipped with manual transmissions. Daewoo Nexia manual transmissions must be filled with transmission lubricants that meet the following standards.

  1. API GL4 SAE 80W90.
  2. API GL4 SAE 75W90.

It should be noted that, according to the manufacturer’s idea, the lubricant resource poured into the Daewoo Nexia gearbox on the conveyor should be sufficient for the entire life of the vehicle. This corresponds to a mileage of 250,000 km, after which the oil needs to be changed. According to the instructions, every 15,000 km it is necessary to check the transmission level and top it up if necessary.

At the same time, according to the recommendations of the manufacturer, changing the oil in the Nexia gearbox is mandatory if the car has been operated for a long time at temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, in the northern regions of our country, changing the gearbox oil is usually carried out immediately after purchasing a car.

3- and 5-door hatchbacks produced in the Republic of Korea between 1994 and 1997 were equipped with automatic transmissions. Such units can only be filled with Dextron II gear oil. The Nexia automatic transmission has a reusable oil filter. When replacing the lubricant, it can be cleaned and put back.

List of required tools:

  • socket wrench 17;
  • socket wrench 13;
  • a special funnel-oiler or large syringe;
  • basin;
  • old toothbrush.

Before carrying out the procedure, you must drive 10 km, drive the car into a pit and set the handbrake. Changing the oil in the gearbox is carried out as follows.

  1. We unscrew the plug of the control hole and place a basin under it. The inspection hole is located on the side of the gearbox housing.
  2. Remove the dirt cap from the filler plug. This hole is located on the intermediate gearbox housing.
  3. Loosen and unscrew the filler plug. At the same time, we clean it from dirt.
  4. We climb under the car, place a basin under the gearbox housing and partially unscrew 10 or 11 (depending on the type of gearbox) bolts securing the oil pan.
  5. After the transmission has finished draining, remove the pan and clean it and the gears from visible dirt with a toothbrush.
  6. We install the pan back and at the same time change its gasket. Tighten all the bolts.
  7. After this, we move into the engine compartment and, using a funnel or syringe, fill in new oil until it flows out of the control hole.
  8. We clean the control hole plug from dirt and screw it in until it stops.
  9. Screw the filler plug into place and put the dirt cap on it.

All. The automatic transmission oil is changed in the same way. The only difference is that, in addition to the procedures described above, after removing the pan, the oil filter is removed, cleaned of dirt with a toothbrush and acetone and installed back.

Replacing engine lubricant

As you know, Nexias were equipped with 4 types of power units:

  1. G15MF.
  2. A15MF.
  3. A15SMS.
  4. F16D3.

The first 3 had a volume of 1.5 liters and were installed only on Nexia 1 and 2 generations. The latest engine has a volume of 1.6 liters and is now installed on Daewoo Gentra cars. Changing the oil in the F16D3 engine is carried out in the same way as in 1.5-liter power units.

Along with the oil, the oil filter must also be replaced.. In addition, when carrying out this operation, it would be a good idea to check the oil pressure sensor located near the crankshaft pulley, as it quite often fails. List of required tools:

  • wrench 19;
  • slotted screwdriver;
  • funnel-oiler;
  • jack;
  • bucket;
  • multimeter

The Daewoo Nexia oil sump holds about 5 liters of lubricant, so you should prepare a large bucket. Before carrying out the operation, we warm up the engine, drive the car into the pit and put the handbrake on. The algorithm of actions is as follows.

  1. Unscrew the drain plug and place a bucket under it.
  2. When the oil stops draining, jack up the right and left sides of the car alternately.
  3. We screw the plug back, and be sure to change the copper sealing washer.
  4. We pierce the oil filter with a slotted screwdriver closer to the edge (away from the engine).
  5. We clean and check the mobility of the anti-drainage valve.
  6. We fill the new oil filter halfway with new engine oil, lubricate its O-ring and screw the filter to the cylinder block by hand.
  7. We check the oil pressure sensor: to do this, unhook the wiring harness from it and connect one contact of the multimeter instead of the wiring, and the other to the sensor body and turn on the network dialing mode. If the circuit is not closed, unscrew the sensor and replace it with a new one.
  8. Unscrew the oil filler cap and pour new oil into the engine through a funnel.
  9. Check the lubricant level with a dipstick. It should be near the “max” mark.

That's all. After this, all that remains is to start the engine and check the joints for leaks.

In addition, it should be noted that the original Daewoo oil filter does not have an anti-drainage valve. This fact must be taken into account when purchasing a new part.

The Nexia service instructions state that the gearbox oil is designed for the entire operating life, but experts recommend changing it at least after 100 thousand kilometers, although ideally, even on a new car, you can replace the factory oil with synthetic oil, especially if it’s winter in your region severe frosts.

Replacement is carried out with the car and the gearbox itself warmed up. And since you need to remove the transmission pan to drain the oil, proceed carefully so as not to get wet.

The entire volume of oil in the Daewoo Nexia box is 1.8 liters, but, as a rule, no more than 1.7 liters will be drained. Therefore, you will need to buy two liter bottles of synthetic transmission oil with a viscosity of 75w90 standard GL-4 (choose the brand according to your taste, for example Castrol or shell). And in addition to oil in the box, also buy a new pan gasket. And the tools you need are a “13” wrench (socket head).

Nexiah N100 pan is secured with ten bolts, buy pan gasket GM 96179241.

Now briefly about the process of changing the oil in the Daewoo Nexia box. The most convenient way is to find an overpass or a hole, although you can also get by with a jack and stumps. Having previously placed the container under the box, carefully unscrew half of the bolts and wait until the bulk of the oil has drained from the box, then completely remove the pan and tear off the gasket (before installing a new one, we clean the oil from the seat as well).

Also, do not unscrew the bolt for the oil level control hole in the gearbox. There is a metal catcher on it (we clean the magnet from any debris, and it is inserted into the cork and is held in place due to its properties).

When the oil has completely drained, you can screw back the lid of the box pan (the bolts should be tightened gradually from the center to the edges crosswise), but leave the level plug (we will use it to guide how much to pour until the oil begins to flow out).

Drain the oil with the 5th gear engaged.

Having opened the hood, we find the breather, immediately remove the cover from it, and then turn it out to pour oil through this hole.

It will be inconvenient to pour from a bottle, so you need a hose of a suitable diameter and a funnel. Here it is better to work together (one fills, the other watches when it starts to flow out through the hole in the level), and as soon as it has overflowed, tighten the level plug and add about 100 more grams, the control level shows the minimum.

It is filled in for the entire period of operation of the car, but does not specify in any way exactly how long this service life should be and how to check whether it is over or not. Therefore, in order to avoid serious financial costs for repairing the gearbox, it is recommended to replace it every 100 thousand km. mileage If you have difficulty shifting gears in cold weather, you can change the oil in the box even before the mileage reaches 100 thousand.

It is almost impossible to check what exactly is poured into the gearbox at the factory, but most often this oil turns out to be mineral oil, which thickens quite strongly in winter. When planning a replacement, it is recommended to purchase synthetic or semi-synthetic gearbox oil.

From time to time, at least once every 15 thousand km. mileage, you should check the lubricant level in the gearbox. The design of the Daewoo Nexia gearbox does not provide for lubricant replacement throughout its entire service life. However, sometimes the need for replacement still arises - in the case of a gearbox repair, when switching to a lubricant with a different viscosity, and in other similar situations. When planning a replacement, it is advisable to drain the old lubricant in a warm and fluid state, that is, within 10-15 minutes from the end of the trip.

Which one should I use?

In the case of the Daewoo Nexia gearbox, it is best to use a synthetic or semi-synthetic lubricant. The manufacturer recommends using SAE 80W GL-4 transmission oils, and if the vehicle is operated in frosty climates, when the air temperature does not rise above -30° for a long period, the use of 75W90 GL-4 is recommended.

Accordingly, the Daewoo Nexia gearbox can be filled with both mineral oil 80W90 GL-4 and synthetic or semi-synthetic oil 75W80, 75W90, 80W85 GL-4. One of the best options can be considered 80W GL-4. Synthetic lubricant 75W80 is also excellent, especially in winter. In summer, this oil leads to noise in the gearbox, so it is still better to use oils recommended by the manufacturer.

The volume of oil that must be poured into the gearbox is 1.8 liters.

Tools

In order to replace the fluid in the gearbox of a Daewoo Nexia, you will need the following tools and accessories:

  • jack;
  • syringe;
  • 13 mm socket head;
  • 17 mm socket head;
  • 19 mm wrench;
  • oil directly;
  • transmission pan gasket;
  • container for draining used lubricant.

In order to choose the right gasket, it is first recommended to inspect the transmission pan from below. This is due to the fact that there are two types of pallets, having 10 or 11 holes - the number of holes must be checked before purchasing a gasket. In addition, you don’t have to buy a gasket, but remove the pan and cut it out yourself from paronite, or simply replace it with a sealant, which in practice copes well with the task.

Instructions

Changing the oil in the gearbox is carried out on an overpass or pit. The replacement procedure includes the following steps.

  1. If there is engine protection, remove it.
  2. Using a 10 mm socket, loosen the transmission pan bolts.
  3. We tighten the bolts in the front part of the pan and place a wide container under the drained oil.
  4. After draining all the lubricant, completely remove the pan. In this case, even if the gasket does not break, it is recommended to replace it.
  5. Usually only 1.5 liters of oil is drained, and 200-300 g continues to remain in the crankcase. To completely drain, you can raise the front left wheel to the maximum height possible with a standard jack.
  6. Using a 13 mm socket, unscrew the oil level plug on the right side of the gearbox under the inner CV joint. Then we thoroughly rinse the plug itself from the inside, as well as the loose magnet located in its cavity.
  7. After waiting until oil stops dripping from the gearbox, we install the pan in place, thoroughly cleaning its seat from old grease and gasket residues. The pan is installed with a new gasket or sealant, without tightening the control plug.
  8. Next, you can fill in new gearbox oil. To do this, twist the breather in the upper part of the gearbox, next to the selector mechanism. Remove the plastic cap from the breather and unscrew it using a 19mm wrench.
  9. For convenience, insert a funnel into the breather hole and slowly add oil until it begins to flow from the plug hole, then tighten the control plug. As a result, about one and a half liters of lubricant is poured.
  10. If the front left wheel was lifted to completely drain the fluid, then after closing the plug, add oil to the nominal volume. Otherwise, there is no need to perform additional filling.
  11. All that remains is to screw the breather back to its original location.

At this point, replacing the fluid in the Daewoo Nexia gearbox can be considered complete. There is nothing complicated about this, all that remains is to check and make sure that the gears change easily enough, regardless of the time of year.

Did you carry out the replacement yourself?

If you are the owner of a Daewoo Nexia car, you may encounter a problem such as a lack of technical information regarding the Daewoo Nexia checkpoint. Indeed, in the instructions, the manufacturer clearly indicates that the volume of transmission fluid will ensure correct operation of the gearbox throughout its entire operating life. Unfortunately, even if you try to re-read these lines several times, you still won’t find a word about when this operational period ends. We will try to help you in this matter by providing useful information to increase your knowledge regarding the operation of individual important components and mechanisms of your car.

The oil change in the Daewoo Nexia gearbox should be carried out after 60 - 100 thousand kilometers.

Change of oil

Some motorists prefer to perform such manipulations almost immediately after purchasing a car, despite the extremely low mileage. They argue for their actions by the fact that oil could have been filled at the factory, accompanied by technical characteristics that do not suit the car owner. Indeed, the fact of such dissatisfaction and, to some extent, reinsurance is confirmed. At the factory, mineral oil is sometimes poured into the gearbox. This liquid is good in the summer. Unfortunately, in winter it becomes excessively thick, preventing the normal operation of the gearbox. It is for this reason that many people prefer to purchase synthetic or semi-synthetic oil.

If you have decided to replace the transmission fluid in the gearbox of your favorite car yourself, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with our useful tips. Initially you need to go to the Daewoo Nexia checkpoint. It doesn’t matter if you have absolutely no idea how to do this. We are ready to instruct you, eliminating the information gap. By the way, it is useful to carry out such a check after the car has once again covered 15 thousand kilometers. By checking how much oil is left in the Daewoo Nexia box, you can top up the missing amount in time and prevent gearbox failure.

Believe me, the gearbox can, of course, be repaired at service stations, however, such help will cost you too much.

So, to check the oil level in the Daewoo Nexia gearbox, you need to use a special dipstick, which you can easily find after lifting the hood.

This special dipstick has markings accompanied by the words “min” and “max”.

It is important that the trace of oil on the dipstick after removal from the hole is between these two marks. If you notice that it has dropped below the minimum mark, it means that there is an oil leak in the box. Be sure to add the missing amount and observe in the following days whether the loss continues or not by re-checking the oil level. If a lack of transmission fluid is again detected in the Daewoo Nexia gearbox, take steps to find the problem.

Replacement frequency

Understanding that driving on used material can cause serious damage to the gearbox, we recommend that you fill in new transmission fluid after one hundred thousand kilometers. Our recommendations are based entirely on statements made by professional service station technicians. Although there is a separate category of thrifty car owners who prefer to drain the used fluid after 60 thousand kilometers.

Well, you have the right to decide for yourself when it will be useful, but we recommend not to delay this process if the mileage has exceeded one hundred thousand. You should not save on purchasing consumables for your “iron horse”, since such savings can lead to even greater financial losses.

What oil to use

We have already drawn your attention to the fact that there are several options for transmission fluid, differing in their technical characteristics. In particular, when using mineral oil, the gearbox will function successfully, but only if there are no low temperatures. You won't be able to drive your car in winter if you use mineral oil; it will simply become too thick, with a high level of viscosity of the oil in the box. Accordingly, you will not be able to change speed normally.

Based on this, inexperienced motorists cannot figure out what is good for the car and what oil is best to fill in the Daewoo Nexia gearbox. But experienced car owners confidently prefer semi-synthetic or synthetic varieties of oil fluid. If you read the manufacturer's recommendations, it is easy to find lines where he recommends purchasing and using SAE 80W GL-4 oil. However, if you have to live in a region where the air temperature remains at -30° for a long time, then it is best to pay attention to another product option - 75W90 GL-4.

Many motorists like 75W80 synthetic lubricant. We confirm that it is surprisingly good in cold winters, however, in the summer it can provoke the appearance of third-party noises and sounds, for this reason it is better for you to still opt for the Daewoo Nexia gearbox oil recommended by the manufacturer.

Tools for work

Don’t rush to take your car to a service station; you can handle such a task as changing the oil yourself. You just need to prepare for such manipulation first. In particular, it is important to collect all the necessary tools so that no difficulties arise during the execution process. Every motorist can assemble the tools, since the list consists of those devices that are always at hand. So, you need to prepare:

  • jack;
  • syringe;
  • 13 mm socket heads. and 17 mm;
  • 19 mm wrench;
  • oil;
  • transmission pan gasket;
  • any container into which waste liquid can be drained.

Don't rush to buy a gasket at random, as you may later be disappointed and upset about wasted money. The gasket may be accompanied by ten or eleven holes.

Take the time to look under the box and count the number of holes. If you follow this recommendation, you will be able to purchase the correct transmission gasket. By the way, if the process of purchasing a gasket is accompanied by difficulties, then you can make it yourself by cutting it out of paronite. You can also use a sealant without purchasing a gasket.

Change of oil

To make the process of changing the oil at the Nexia gearbox easy, drive your car into a pit and follow sequentially all the steps we recommend. If the manufacturer has equipped your car's engine with special protection, you will need to carefully remove it first. Now you can easily find the transmission pan; slightly unscrew the bolts holding it. In the front part, unscrew the bolts completely and immediately place the prepared container into which the waste liquid will begin to drain. As soon as the liquid stops draining, remove the pan completely.

We draw your attention to the fact that even if you performed all the actions with great care, thanks to this the gasket remained completely intact, still say goodbye to it and install a new one instead. Now you will have to use a jack, lifting one side of the car and forcing the remaining oil fluid to pour out completely. To do this, you will need to lift the left wheel of your car. Unscrew the plug of the hole, which is intended for checking the oil level, located on the right side under the inner CV joint. After draining the waste oil, you will need to thoroughly wash the plug, magnet and the pan itself. Now you have to carry out the steps in reverse order. After replacing the gasket, install the pan in its original place, just do not rush to tighten the plug.

To avoid spilling transmission fluid, we recommend that you use a funnel. If this is how we change the oil in the Nexia box, then we carry out all actions quickly and extremely carefully. After this, you can return the cork to its place and rub your hands with pleasure, reinforced by the acquired useful skills. If you lifted the left side of the car, then remove the jack and let your car take a horizontal position. After this and only then tighten the plug.

As you can see, there are no difficulties in performing all the actions we have prescribed. To make sure you did everything correctly, start your car and try changing gear speeds. If they switch easily, then you did everything perfectly.

What determines the performance of the Daewoo Nexia’s internal combustion engine and gearbox? From fuel, preferably of good quality, and from engine and transmission oil poured into components and assemblies. To extend the service life of the car, you need to choose oils for the Daewoo Nexia engine and gearbox not based on price, but on characteristics.

Features of Daewoo Nexia

Daewoo Nexia is the most recognizable car that began to conquer our market back in 1992, thanks to which its name has become a household name. Since the release of the first model, Nexia has experienced two restylings, the last of which was carried out 10 years ago.

The popularity of the model is explained by its cost, which is quite competitive, because there are no other explanations for such demand. Its sales are not falling even today.

The most successful version of Nexia are models produced after 2009. The second restyling was beneficial, this was especially reflected in the engines - eight-valve, 1.5 liters and sixteen-valve, 1.6 liters. volume.

The second one came from the Chevrolet Lacetti, its power was 109 “horses”, and it was he who received approving reviews from grateful owners. At that time there was only one gearbox - a 5-speed manual.

Nexia engine oil

As for brands that produce oil, Nexia owners have a wide choice. The manufacturer does not make any clear recommendations. The only condition is compliance with the viscosity characteristics. This indicator is determined in accordance with the climate and the level of average load on the engine.

Requirements

  • The engine can be filled with both semi-synthetic and synthetic oil. The use of mineral water is not recommended.
  • According to API standards, the oil must have a level above SM/CF.
  • 5W-30 is used exclusively at average temperatures below -20℃.
  • The average climate zone allows the use of 5W-40 and 5W-50.
  • For southern regions, preference is given to 5W-50, 10W-40 and 10W-50.

Volumes and timing of replacement

As for the amount of oil that needs to be poured into the Daewoo Nexia engine, it is the same for both types of internal combustion engines - 3.8 liters, the only difference is that the 16-valve engine needs a little more - 150-200 grams. This is where the technological features of the engine components and assemblies affect.

More on the topic: How to choose engine oil for turbocharged engines

The lubricant should be changed every 10 thousand km (about a year) - this is regulated by the manufacturer’s standards. Even if Nexia is idle most of the time, this does not affect the timing in any way - the oil deteriorates over time and its quality is lost.

If the car is used in harsh conditions, then the replacement period is reduced by half.

Oil for Daewoo Nexia box

The official data provided by the manufacturer does not contain any information about what kind of oil to pour into the Daewoo Nexia box, since they believe that the oil filled at the factory cannot be replaced for the entire period of operation of the vehicle.

However, it does not say anything about what this period should be - the owner himself determines the operational capabilities of the machine.

Based on the experience of Nexia owners, we can conclude that if there are no difficulties in the operation of the gearbox, the gears shift smoothly and easily, then you don’t have to think about changing the oil in it until the mileage is 100-150 thousand. If difficulties arise, it is better not to delay the replacement , it's cheaper.
